An Eames of Your Own: Exploring how to collect Eames designs from The Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity
The Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity is delighted to launch its latest feature, An Eames of Your Own, a detailed exploration into curating your own collection of Eames furniture and artifacts drawing from the expertise of the Institute’s head of research and acquisitions. Whether they were created five or fifty years ago, Eames designs remain just as beautiful and useful as ever. Few designs have stood the test of time like Eames furniture has, however with buying vintage items still often being a mystifying process, the Institute’s in-house expert explains what to look for—and what to avoid.
With current interest in Mid-Century Modern design booming, enthusiasts are becoming increasingly interested in collecting vintage designs. Ray and Charles Eames' work has become beloved among fans of mid-century modernism and just about anyone who is passionate about well designed, high quality objects that stand the test of time. Longtime and newly anointed Eames enthusiasts continually seek out vintage pieces, but knowing exactly what to look for—and look out for—requires some foundational knowledge and training.
The exploration sits alongside the work the Institute has released to date, including eight online exhibits which aim to equip everyone with the lessons of Ray and Charles Eames, so that anyone can solve problems through design. With Chief Curator Llisa Demetrios – Ray and Charles Eames’ youngest granddaughter– the Institute is delving into the history and heritage of Eames designs and collaborations, and how useful this can be in shaping the future of the design world. As the ways that we collect and curate our spaces becomes increasingly prevalent, bringing the lessons of Ray and Charles designs to life for future generations remains as relevant as it was during their era.
