Spencer Hung was born in Taipei, Taiwan and raised in Vancouver, Canada where he graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. As he had spent half of his life in the East and the other in the West, he decided to join JIA Inc. as design director, and moved back to his birth place, Taipei.
Spencer Hung was centrally involved in many award winning projects while at one of the biggest lighting and furniture company Bocci, located in Vancouver Canada, including Red Dot Design Award, iF Design Award and Good Design Award. After he moved back to Asia to join JIA Inc. as the design director, he has since led and directed many projects with many well-established designers from all over the world and JIA in-house design team that won Good Design Award, iF Design Award, Red Dot Design Award, ELLE DECO International Award, Home Style Award, Golden Pin Award etc. and also were selected by the Good Design Store and the Wallpaper* Store etc. His personal works have also won the prestigious iF Design Gold Award and Best Product Design of Golden Pin Award.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?: Balance of motivation and contentment.
What is your greatest extravagance?: Have enough free time to cook for my friends and family.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue?: None. Every virtue has its place.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse?: That is insane!
Which talent would you most like to have?: Joggling.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?: I would like to be left handed.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?:Always being on the verge of achieving greatness.
If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?: A teapot owned by a tea master or a sauce pan owned by a great chef.
Where would you most like to live?: Vancouver. I miss that place a lot.
What is your most treasured possession?: Used to be my notebook but now its my iPad Pro. I am pretty obsessed with my Apple Pencil too.
What is your favorite occupation?: Chef
What is your most marked characteristic?: Optimism or too much of it.
What do you most value in your friends?: Forgiveness
Who are your favorite writers?: I almost never read fiction. Any non-fiction writer who is able to write interests me. For example, Leonard Koren, Roland Barthes, Kenya Hara, Manabu Mizuno.
Who is your hero of fiction?: Batman
Which historical figure do you most identify with?: Sen no Rikyū
What is it that you most dislike?: Being wrongly accused.
